Blog Challenge Day 17

Your favorite memory.

I have thought and thought on this challenge for a quite few days. I have plenty of memories, but I am not sure that I have a favorite one. I don't tend to dwell on memories in the past a lot, but I do spend a lot of time planning things in the future, which of course doesn't always work out. Mom thought I should share my earliest memories, but I wrote a couple of those down just now and they were pretty boring...so I deleted them. Memories are usually something that are best shared, and the best of those are the ones that come up over and over in stories told amongst friends or family. So I would have to say the memory that is most hashed and re-told in my family is the Infamous 4th of July at the Cabin.

This all starts on a 4th of July long weekend when I was around 8. We still go up to our cabin near the Canadian border every year and in those years we went in the middle of the summer. My Mom and Gram andI would drive up in our truck and my cousin David and wife Leslie (well, not at the time...but later) would drive up in theirs. Now I know you are thinking sweet cushy multi-room cabin on a lake, but in reality it is a single room miner's cabin with no electricity, running water or cell phone service, near a beaver pond that smells like rotten eggs with a million mosquitoes hunting you down...and it's better than any cushy cabin could be. We have to drive in our food, water, bedding, etc. and that's why it takes two trucks to do it. At those times David and Leslie lived in Yakima, so we would all drive up together. That year the holiday fell on Friday, so we were driving up on the 4th. It was really hot and as we were getting further into the mountains you could see thunderheads developing. We stopped at a small gas station and noticed that there was a required permit we needed to have to build a campfire, which we couldn't get because it was a holiday. We made it up to the cabin and rushed to get the cabin cleaned out. The wildlife move in as soon as we move out and a packrat had made our cabin his (or her) home while we were gone. David used the pistol we brought (along with an assortment of other guns...it's the mountains) to kill the packrat. While I was holding the dogs in a safe place away from where David was shooting, Mom and Leslie and I saw a truck go by with kids sitting on the tailgate. There are other miner's cabins up in the mountains by us, so we figured it was someone staying up at one of those. My Gram shouted something at them, probably about how they were on private property and to get the hell out of there, because that was her typical line. Since we had the dogs with us and we didn't want them eating the packrat, David buried it behind the cabin. Just as we got the last of the stuff in the cabin the sky literally opened up and it began to pour. Leslie had already started a campfire with the nest material from the packrat and other branches and junk that was in the camp, and the fire was going pretty good. Now along with the rain came thunder and lightening and when I was little I HATED thunderstorms. They are no picnic now to me, but I would get physically ill just thinking it was going to thunder when I was younger. So I was in the cabin in my bed with headphones on and my head under a pillow. The rest of this is what I have only heard. At some point Leslie noticed a car or truck pulling up because she called to Mom and Gram, "Here comes a forest ranger and we've got a fire." But it wasn't a forest ranger. There were actually 4 or 5 cop cars on the road beyond some trees that hide our cabin and there were cops coming through those trees with flack jackets on and big guns. They yelled for everyone to come out of the cabin and put your hands in the air. So Mom and David and Leslie all came out with their hands up, but my Gram came out to the top step and put her hands on her hips and said "This is private property and you have no right to trespass here!" My Mom yelled that I was in the cabin and was too afraid to come out. Gram kept arguing with the police and my Mom finally said "Shut up Mom and put your hands in the air before they shoot you!" So finally someone asked what this was all about. And they said that a group of people had called into the police saying that they saw a man with a gun pointing it at a woman who was on the ground screaming and they thought he was going to kill her. We figure this was the group of people that drove by with the kids on the tailgate. We told them what really happened, that we were killing a packrat. They asked to check our guns and had us dig up the packrat and took everyone's IDs and probably had them checked. About this point we all started to get friendly. They told us where they had come from...Chewelah, Kettle Falls, Colville and Spokane. There was even a K-9 unit that was called in because they thought it was a drug raid, not something that is uncommon in that area. We were so sorry and my Mom said to one of the guys, "This is the 4th of July!" and the guy said, "Yeah and I had my hamburger thisclose," holding his hands in front of his face. We laughed about it the whole time we were there. When we were hauling in the old table we leave up there someone dragged it to the door of the cabin leaving two long drag marks in the dirt. It made it look like we had dragged a dead body into the cabin after all.

Blog Challenge Day 16

Your First Kiss.

Wow, I think only three or four people know this story.

So one summer after high school Nicole, Paul, and (I think) Jayne-Leigh, and I got together and went out. I believe there was drinking. Of course. We were all playing around in Nicole's apartment in Yakima, the nice one with the pool in the center of the complex. We were being pretty stupid and somehow the conversation and craziness got around to first kisses. I said that I was still waiting for mine and we started harassing Paul about how I was the one who had first had a crush on Paul and how he then preceded to date or chase every one of my friends from 4th grade through high school. I admitted that I still had a crush on him and how it would be better if we just kissed and then I could move on. So he went in for one and I was laughing and he got my teeth. Then I was too embarrassed to do anything more, so of course we all got a bit drunker. Then on the balcony he came in for the real one and we smooched. I think Paul would agree it was like kissing a sibling and the crush-bubble that I had carried around for a good decade or more was popped. It's a good thing Stephanie finally got him to commit because we had shaken on an agreement in high school to be each other's back-up. You know where if you don't get married by the time you turn 30 you have a person who will marry you. That would have been awkward!

Blog Challenge Day 15

Your Dreams.
Seesh, how do you answer that? I do dream quite a bit and remember a lot of them, especially if it's the morning I am sleeping in. I figure that's because I wake up and fall asleep multiple times, rather than one long half dead coma-sleep until my alarm goes off. I have had some very strange dreams and some very moving ones and I type up the ones that stick with me the most in a dream diary on the computer. It's pretty interesting to go back and read them. Here are some of the dreams I've had.

About 5 years after I graduated from high school and before things like Facebook and Myspace took off to keep us all in touch I had a dream about my friend Eric. I hadn't seen him in years and I hadn't talked to him on the phone for quite a while. I remember seeing him in the dream and feeling so glad to see him...like he was dead and had come back. I hugged him and was crying saying I was so sorry that I hadn't been there, for him or for whatever reason he was gone. I woke up literally crying. I knew that Megan still saw Eric occasionally since she lived on the West side, so I emailed her and that summer we went over and saw the new apartment she was going to get near Tacoma and we went up to Seattle and saw Eric. It was just a scary enough dream to get me to get back in touch with him.
Another dream I had one time when I was in high school was that I was just a little kid, probably about 6 in the dream. I was riding along in a car in the back seat and my Mom and Gram were in the front. We stopped at this hotel and went in, but when we got in it was a shack, windows boarded up, etc. They had guns and there may have been some other people with us. They were looking out the windows and shouting about who was where outside the building. I got scared and hid in a closet as a gunfight erupted. I could hear people yelling outside about a cease-fire as some armed SWAT guys came through the front door. They took everyone under arrest and found me. I went outside with them and saw my "parents" who were Mulder and Scully from The X-Files (I was REALLLLLY into this show then). I ran to them and they kissed and hugged my and put me in the back seat of a Ford Taurus (they always drove a Ford Taurus) and I was happy....and then I woke up. Bizarre I know, but dreams aren't ever normal.
So on a lighter note here are my Valentine's cookies for the lonely hearts club!

Blog Challenge Day 14

What you wore today....again.

So last time I showed you what I wear everyday, this time I thought I'd share how well I clean up.

I (like Melinda) love these new shirts with all the ruffles, especially how they hide the fluffiness of my figure. I think this makes me look skinny (which I by no means am) and that makes me feel good. It was Sunday, so I cleaned up for church. But this is what I will wear the rest of my lazy Sunday.

Nothing like a pair of sweats and a t-shirt to lay around in and watch movies and knit. ;)

Blog Challenge Day 13

This week.

Are you ready? It's a long one...

Sunday Feb 6

Worked too long and had too many cultures. Got to work at 6:40 AM and didn't get off until 6:10 PM. DVR'd the Superbowl thank goodness. Thought of Nicole's birthday all day 'cause I wrote it down on my culture cards a million times. When we got home we made bruschetta and potato skins for dinner and started watching the Superbowl after it ended. Favorite commercials -- The Chevy truck "Timmy's in trouble" and the Doritos bring everything back to life including Grandpa.

Monday Feb 7

Had a bad night. Woke up with a sore, dry throat in the middle of the night and just stayed bad all night. Couldn't hardly blow my nose in the morning because the soft palate was so inflamed and swollen. Could hardly pull myself through the day. Talked to Nicole on the phone and talked about her brithday and more. Knitted a bit and watched TV a lot. Napped a bit, but at dinner Mom told me I looked like I was dead on my feet. I called in sick for work on Tuesday, which I have only done two other times in 5 years.

Tuesday Feb 8

Mom got up at 6:45 AM to take Ariel to the vet's She had an appointment to get a root canal on a tooth that was cracked. We hoped they could save her tooth 'cause it was her big back molar and they did. So now she has a filling. I went back to sleep with Toby who was distraught that Ariel was gone. He was less whiny after Mom got back, but has been moping around the house all day. My throat was still sore and I slept until 10, which hopefully gets me over this quicker. Lots of tea and knitting today...I am back up to where I had to tear back my sock to because I am sticking to my motto of "I don't knit crap."

Wednesday Feb 9

First day back to work. Was so very tired and managed to work my whole day away and still get off on time. Got home in time to watch a whole episode of Ellen and currently I am watching James Blunt sing his new song, which is really good...I love guys with English accents. Working on a dinner menu for the next two weeks and getting a grocery list together so we can run errands while the dogs are at the spa tomorrow and then not have to go anywhere from Friday night until Tuesday morning. I love nesting down at home for a long weekend and leaving the world behind. Going to do some homework and of course....knit!

Thursday Feb 10

Could not get going this morning! Late, late, late. Dogs went to work with us because Mom takes them down to the groomer's at her morning break. They always enjoy riding in the car and I think they look forward to spa day. It was Keirsten and Carrie's Thursday of Fun at work. That's the day all the adults are off and they leave the kids in charge. Being the two youngest micro techs in the department means the professionalism drops a bit. So it was 107.3 on the radio and lots of craziness. Even the students notice. One of our students from last year is hiring on and she came through just to check in and said "Is it Fun Thursday?!!" Thank goodness my current student was there 'cause I was really tired and she pulled us through the bench really well! I love it when I have students who get it. Mom and I ran around grocery stores, Costco and PetSmart after work to get all those supplies we need every two weeks. Went and picked up the dogs as 7 PM and drove thru Burger Ranch to pick up dinner. Ate, put groceries away and went to bed.....soooooo very tired.

Friday Feb 11

Went to work thinking it was going to be another Day of Fun 'cause it was just me and Keirsten and Matt. But it was Keirsten's day to be really tired. Her daughter had an ear infection and had kept her up most of the night. We still managed to have an awesome day. Printed off my paycheck stub and it was looking pretty sweet from all the overtime and extra weekend days I worked. I was thinking of buying some yarn for the Christmas presents Mom and I are starting on for the family with the extra dough. Came home and looked into if my seed order had shipped (nope, not yet) and bought some music. I am still using the money from my iTunes gift cards from Christmas, which I love...free music is the best. I really wanted that new song "Jar of Hearts" and wanted to get the whole Bruno Mars CD. I also picked up some new P!nk, Train and the brand new Lady Gaga song "Born This Way" (which is AWESOME!)...and then the phone rang. It was my credit card company saying my payment was 6 days past due. What?! I ran to my mail holder and found the paper (out of the envelope) down in the front of the slot. S**T. So I go online to pay it and the payment due has basically doubled. There goes all that money I just made. Hours and hours of my life wasted for a late bill. And they could potentially raise my APR to 29%. We'll see where it goes, but I totally broke down crying and depressed. Mom and I talked about how we both are so far in debt and really REALLY need to get ourselves under control. I am thinking about going to one of those consolidation places and closing my two biggest credit cards. I don't know. We made dinner after that...bruschetta and spaghetti with browned butter and myzithra cheese. Bruschetta is making an appearance no fewer than 4 times on our two week menu...obsessed! Watched TV and knit after that. I am to the point where I need to start knitting the heel flap on my sock and am a little scared about it. Dez called and we moved our day out to another weekend, she has a concert to go to and I am still so very tired from my cold. We think getting together for a game night would be cool, so I think I'll get us and Keirsten together and we'll pound out a good night to do it. I love game nights!

Saturday Feb 12

Slept 11 hours last night. Yes! Feels so good. Got to eat a big breakfast, yummy eggs, bacon and hash-browns with blueberry muffins. Mom and I discussed what we wanted to do today and I had wanted to get the dried herbs we had hanging in the pantry from last fall into jars. So we sat down at the table and I put in a DVD of Doctor Who and we stripped all the herbs from the stems and got them into labeled jars. Then I also wanted to put carrot seeds on tissue paper with water soluble glue so that it would be easier in the spring to plant them a nice distance apart and not have to thin so many. It was a hint that someone had given us at the Master Gardener seminars last spring. After we finished with that we went out around the yard and looked at what we want to accomplish this summer. Adding to our garden, making a composting area, getting a new wood shed put in, cutting down excessive cherry trees, planting another pear tree that'll cross-pollinate our D'Anjou pear tree, putting in a rock garden next to the pergola, getting new raspberry bushes, planting more shade plants along the north side of the house...you know just a few things. :) We also got into the Tuff shed and pulled out the seed starting systems and found two bags of germinating mix and half a big bag of transplant mix. Woohoo! Something I don't have to purchase! Now I am sitting down thinking about knitting and throwing out my blog post and getting ready to start another week.

Blog Challenge Day 12

What's in your Bag?

Well that depends on which bag you're talking about. Let's start with the bag every woman carries...her purse. I was not into big purses when I started carrying one. I still don't like those bags that look like carpet bags, but I do have a moderately large purse. It all started when I had to start carrying around things like a driver's license and cash. This began with a small purse to carry the necessities. When I went to college I needed to carry a checkbook as well (it was 2000, debit cards were new and rarely accepted...). Also I got my first cell phone (with 30 whole minutes of call time a month!) and more ID cards for college. This led to a wallet and the accoutrements of checkbook, pen and cell phone. As time went on I "needed" to carry more and more things in my purse. Today there is not only my checkbook, wallet, coin purse and cell phone but also my iPod touch and a set of earbuds (for games for when I get bored/when I need music in the car/when I am at a yarn store and want to buy yarn for a pattern I keep in my iBooks app), a small tape measure and calculator (for when I am at Home Depot and need to quickly calculate how many pavers I need in a certain square foot area/when I am at Target and need to measure a piece of furniture to see if it will fit where I want to put it), Kleenex and a small pharmacy of pills (for headaches/stuffy noses/acid reflux/bathroom issues), mascara and lip stick (for who knows what), eye drops and chapstick (for those dry contacts and dry lips), nail clippers (to MacGyver yourself out of any situation), a note pad (for drawing/writing notes and such), my car keys plus an extra set (in case you need to drop it off at the shop at a moments notice/get locked out) and other occasional items (gum, candy, chocolate, feminine products, etc). There was a funny situation recently at Keirsten's birthday dinner where someone needed Advil, someone else needed some fake Sudafed and another needed a Kleenex and I just kept pulling things out of my purse. It does seem like a never-ending magic bag at times.

If you see me at work all the time then you know I also have another bag, my knitting bag. In it I keep at least one, but sometimes two or three, knitting projects that I am working on. On the handle is a row counter that's on a beaded band that I made and can be removed easily. In the pocket is a tape measure for measuring your work for those times when the pattern says "knit in stockinette for 9 inches." Also is a pair of scissors for snipping your yarn, a pen for marking notes on the pattern, a small crochet hook for picking up dropped stitches, and assorted scraps of paper or Post-it Notes with parts of patterns written on them for whatever project I was working on at the time and didn't want to copy off the whole pattern. These are the necessities for any knitter.

Reading both of these maybe I do need one of those carpet bags...I could combine the two and never be left for want of things to do while I wait. I was sitting in a movie theater just last week waiting for the movie to start and turned to Mom and said..."I wish I had my sock to work on."

Looks like I am turning into my Grandmother after all...

Blog Challenge Day 11

Your siblings.

Oh this is easy. I don't have any. The End.

Okay, okay that would be a boring post. It is true that I am an only child and that it doesn't bother me. I enjoyed growing up with all the attention from my Mom directed only at me and not having to compete with a sibling for it. I am very good at entertaining myself and for waiting for others when I need help with something. With all that being said, I can't say that I was truly sibling-less. My family has always been pretty close and my cousins are about as close to siblings as I get. When I was little my cousin David lived with us for a bit. He is 13 years older than I am and also an only child. I managed to be that little "sister" he never wanted, driving him crazy while he played with toy cars and asking uncomfortable questions when he'd bring home girlfriends. I also have 3 girl cousins Melinda, Erin and Katey, that are 1, 2 and 4 years younger than me. I call them the perfect siblings cause when you got tired of them it was usually time for them to go home. :) But really they are the closest thing I will ever have to sisters. We spent most every summer together at my house, or their house, or the beach. We have fought like sisters, competed against each other's grades in school like sisters and broken each other's toys like sisters. We have banded together and driven each other crazy. In college Melinda and Erin and I used to have monthly game nights that were the best. There came certain rules out of these, like that Erin and I couldn't play together on the same team. When you play Taboo with someone that your grew up with you can use easy clues like, "Grammy's deodorant is?" "Secret!" or, "Grammy fans herself with this." "Paper plate!" We also learned that I could count to three,"1, 2, 3...Tri...Tri...1, 2, 3" (It was Pictionary and it was a tripod.) I hope that we will be able to remain a close family as we all grow up and move apart, because as an only child, they're all I've got.
